Tips for Writing a Good Letter to the Editor:

Letters to the editor are an effective way to communicate the message of the Party and its candidates because the message comes directly from a citizen, not the newspaper itself. Letters to the Editor allow you to voice concern or praise about issues facing your community.  They can inform, influence public opinion, educate readers and ask for action.

A letter to the editor helps to balance out biased reporting and call out our opponents for making false claims.

  • Letters should be concise and the message clear and easy to understand. If possible, refer to past articles or editorials in the paper.
  • Quoting a source is a good way to backup your statement.
  • Always make sure that someone who did not read the story you are referring to would understand what you are talking about.
  • Make sure your statements are accurate.
  • Check spelling and grammar.
  • Include your Full Name, Address and Daytime Phone Number for verification

Each publication requires a unique method to submit a letter to the editor.

  • Some require the letter to be submitted through a web form.
  • For letters submitted by email, the subject line should be “Letter to the Editor.”
  • For letters submitted by snail mail, they should be marked “Attn: Editor.”

Before a letter is printed, a member of the newspaper staff will call to verify the author of the letter. Even if a particular letter is not printed, it can influence a newspaper’s future reporting,
